Like they're trying to make Lutherns out of us all...
The Redhead pointed out this New York Times article to me, which of course got my dander up.

I have known many, many nuns. All of my education has come from Catholic institutions and naturally I've come in contact with nuns from various orders. I'm related to nuns. And more than anything, nuns are some of the most dedicated, hard working, compassionate people I know. Everyone jokes about scary, mean nuns that crack your knuckles with rulers, but these nuns only exist as a trope for me. Yes, I've known nuns I haven't been exactly fond of, the same way you meet any regular person that gets on your nerves.

My problem with this whole "investigation" of nuns — aside from the obvious "How long did you willfully ignore the whole pedophile priest issue? You're in no position to investigate anything; MIND YOUR P's AND Q's!" — is this section of the article:
Cardinal Levada sent a letter to the Leadership Conference saying an investigation was warranted because it appeared that the organization had done little since it was warned eight years ago that it had failed to “promote” the church’s teachings on three issues: the male-only priesthood, homosexuality and the primacy of the Roman Catholic Church as the means to salvation.

First of all: REALLY? This is your biggest concern with the nuns? That they're not towing the line when it comes to PR on your outdated and bigoted doctrines? So you're disrupting their lives and demeaning their work for this. SERIOUSLY. MY GOD. One would think they would have bigger problems to worry about. As one commenter aptly put it, "These superannuated, out-of-touch male leaders seem more concerned with spying on well-meaning nuns than with attending to more urgent matters all over the world."

Secondly, all of it smacks of Pre-Vatican II thinking, one of my major issues with Pope Benedict. Along with the removal of liturgical dance and the return of the Latin Mass, it's an effort to distance the clergy from the congregation, to make the church less accessible to those that subscribe to the faith.

Honestly, it's like the Vatican wants me to be Pagan. And given the ways I practice my faith these days, I honestly don't know why I even bother getting upset anymore.

Edit: As usual, Jezebel says it better.

An Open Letter To SEPTA
Dear SEPTA,

How stupid are you? You really didn't anticipate this many people? Seriously -- You guys had the same exact problem during Live 8 three years ago. You think you would have learned. "We have been overwhelmed with people." WELL, DUH. Especially since every news station and radio station were broadcasting "Don't drive into the city! Take SEPTA!" upon your recommendation.

GET IT TOGETHER, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.

Pffft,

8K

Please tell me you're kidding. PLEASE. MY GOD.
I cannot stand that woman. I CANNOT BELIEVE SHE KEPT WINKING AT THE CAMERAS. As I texted to all my friends: Fuck off, Sarah Palin, with your folksy bullshit nonsense.

Joe Biden, thank you for keeping your crazy at a minimum tonight. Although I really wanted you to wipe the floor with her, there's no denying that you were nothing but courteous and respectful towards Gov. Palin. Thank you for calling her out on her use of the word "Maverick."

How anyone can be undecided in this race is beyond me.

Flames! Flames, on the sides of my face.
To the surprise of absolutely no one, I don't like Sarah Palin. But then again, as a Jezebel article says, I don't like most people who are diabolically anti-choice, hunt wolves by chasing them down in planes and then shooting them when they get tired, supports tearing up the environment, banning books, and privatized healthcare. So, you know. Shocker.

However. Let's talk about this "community organizer" bullshit.

Sarah Palin and the McCain campaign have thrown this "insult" out a whopping 4 times in the past two days, as a way (in my opinion) of snidely insinuating Obama's lack of experience and belittling his work in the South Side of Chicago. The New York Times features a parsing of the phrase where liberal Ezra Klien feels the Republicans are being vaguely racist. I don't know that I even want to touch that notion with a ten foot pole, because MY GOD PEOPLE.

My issue, is this: For a party that is all about small government and in favor of individuals supporting each other instead of governmental bureaucrats, this "community organizer" insult is especially hypocritical and retarded. Because if you're not going to have government agencies do it, you know what you need to pick up the slack? COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS. You know what else? Given McCain's call to service in his acceptance speech the other night, YOUR "INSULT" IS PARTICULARLY STUPID.

And also:

Community Organizers
(with thanks to the Redhead)

So once again, Sarah Palin and the McCain campaign, I'm asking you to shut your freaking pie holes already, unless you plan on making some damn sense.

And while we're on the subject of Sarah Palin, The Daily Show has been hitting home run after home run:

I don't want to harp and linger on this Bristol Palin flapadoodle, because I do think that poor girl deserves her privacy as she tries to come to grips with the changes her life is facing. But I think that final clip very aptly points out that Brisol and her now husband-to-be had a choice in what they did. (Just as they chose to have sex without using birth control.) It's the same choice her mother had when she found out that she would be having a mentally disabled child. A choice that they don't want others to have, it appears, but it's fine for them right now. Nobody likes abortion. But having the ability and personal freedom (and thus, responsibility) to choose is vital.

This is an argument I've gotten into with Krista at least once, and other conservatives many times. There's no easy answer on abortion, because it's essentially linked to your belief on where life begins. However, it's not like abortion is ever going to go away, even if Roe vs. Wade is overturned. It's just going to become dangerous and occur in risky and unsanitary conditions. Therefore, abortion needs to be made safe, available, and -- key word here -- rare. Which requires better sexual education programs, more free clinics, and better health care options -- all things Republicans are statistically against and do you see what I'm getting at here?

So yes. Sarah Palin insights a white-hot rage in me, is my point. I think she gives feminists a false light and bad name. I think she's nothing but subordinate, but knows how to "play the game," making it look like she's in control. If that makes any sense, at all. It's also, as Gloria Steinem says, about not about having a woman as a VP candidate. "Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It's about making life more fair for women everywhere." Which...as I've illustrated above I don't think Palin does. I think Palin is insulting, smug, and most importantly unqualified.

Christ, this was supposed to be just a couple quick notes on the whole "community organizer" bull shit, and it's turned into a missive. To be continued, possibly.

Internal argument
Voice 1: "I don't have a snowflake's chance in hell."

Voice 2: "Stop it. This is precisely your problem, you know."

Voice 1: "Whatever. My gift is realism. I know what the score truly is."

Voice 2: "I said, STOP IT. This is exactly what we reflected on at Ostara. What did we say binds us?"

Voice 1: "Fear and self doubt."

Voice 2: "And what energy did we concentrate on when we danced the winter away? What seeds did we plant?"

Voice 1: "Creativity. Travel. Passion."

Voice 2: "And what did we say we needed to do to break the bonds?"

Voice 1: "It's just that--"

Voice 2: "WHAT DID WE SAY?!"

Voice 1: "That I needed to put myself out there more. Take risks. Not be afraid to flaunt myself a little."

Voice 2: "That's right."

Voice 1: "But...I doubt myself for a reason. I've stumbled enough times. I've seen others succeed where I've failed so that I know exactly what my assets are, where my faults reside. I don't dream them away. I'm fucking practical."

Voice 2: "You're fucking cynical. And cynicism? It isn't attractive on anyone."

Voice 1: "Oh, so sorry. Guess I can't do anything right."

Voice 2: "Piss off. Dr. McCormick thinks you're talented enough and smart enough to start your own magazine. The Doc thinks your ideas are unique and interesting enough to get to Cardiff for that conference. Liz wants you to submit your stories to publications. On Saturday, Haven said that you're too hard on yourself. These are not people who compliment lightly or blow sunshine up your ass for the fun of it."

Voice 1: "..."

Voice 2: "So why can these people see these things and you can't?"

Voice 1: "I just don't like being rejected."

Voice 2: "Well who does?"

Voice 1: "At this stage in the game, I honestly don't think I can handle the disappointment."

Voice 2: "Disappointment is a part of life. It happens, you deal, you learn from it. Remember what Renee said, 'We all are fully in charge of our own happiness.' What are you going to do? Spend the rest your life on the couch with Dill?"

Voice 1: "No. I'm going to spend the rest of my life safe."

Voice 2: "Fuck safe. You're only going to get what you're willing to take. That's what YOU said on Sunday."

Voice 1: "I did?"

Voice 2: "Yes. What happened to that confidence, that kick-ass behavior?"

Voice 1: "It...dwindled."

Voice 2: "..."

Voice 1: "What? Why are you looking at me that way?"

Voice 2: "..."

Voice 1: "Stop it! You're creeping me out."

Voice 2: "Are you fucking kidding me with this?"

Voice 1: "What?"

Voice 2: "It DWINDLED?"

Voice 1: "Yeah."

Voice 2: "No. Cojones like that? They don't just dwindle."

Voice 1: "Um...they don't?"

Voice 2: "NO. They don't. Whatever the outcomes, you rocked this weekend AND you had fun. That confidence? That power? That 'balls to the wind' behavior? That's lurking away inside of you."

Voice 1: "Ok, yeah. But--"

Voice 2: "But nothing!"

Voice 1: "One word: Alcohol."

Voice 2: "SHUT UP."

Voice 1: "It's just that--"

Voice 2: "SACK UP, HO."

Voice 1: "But what if--"

Voice 2: "Oh, wah, wah, wah, wah. What if the other kids on the playground don't like me? What if McCain wins the presidency? What if zombies attack on Christmas Eve? What if the world ended tomorrow? You can't base anything on 'what ifs.'"

Voice 1: "Zombies attacking on Christmas Eve? That was the best you could come up with?"

Voice 2: "Shut up. You know what I mean."

Voice 1: "No, seriously? Zombies attacking would be kind of cool. I know exactly who I would have on my Zombie Attack Force."

Voice 2: "Stephanie, Mikey Likes It, Renee, Dave."

Voice 1: "Exactly!"

Voice 2: "CAN WE GET BACK TO THE SUBJECT AT HAND?"

Voice 1: "Oh. Right."

Voice 2: "The point is, you're never going to get anywhere if you're second-guessing yourself. Cynicism, self-doubt, and timidness aren't helping you. You've held onto them long enough. They're not working. They're not attractive. You know what does work? You know what helps? You know what is attractive? Confidence. Proximity. Boldness."

Voice 1: "Well isn't that just so easy for you to say? Isn't that so easy for everyone else to tell me? How very fucking convenient. Them in the perfect relationships, with their perfect jobs, their perfect little plans falling just into place."

Voice 2: "Oh, you know what? You can eat it, wanker. No one has the perfect relationship, job, or plan falling into place -- no matter what it may seem from the outside. You know what they do have? The sense to take a risk, to fucking try something instead of silently wishing for it. The sense to fucking work on it."

Voice 1: "It shouldn't be this hard."

Voice 2: "It shouldn't be too easy either. The only things worth having are the things you've worked and struggled for. If you fail, you're no worse off than you are now."

Voice 1: "..."

Voice 2: "You know I'm right."

Voice 1: "....Yeah."

Voice 2: "It's time to get your ass in gear. Get moving."

Voice 1: "Ok. Hey...?"

Voice 2: "Mmm?"

Voice 1: "I'm scared."

Voice 2: "Me too."

Like, thanks for the stomach ulcer. No, REALLY.
I now present an actual phone call between your blogger and her roommate Mike, who is currently visiting family in Montana.

ME: Hey, how's Montana?

MIKE: Pretty good, listen: I just talked to the guy about the condo. Turns out his in-law really needed a place to live, so he got it instead. So it looks like you're stuck with me!

ME:...Uh...?

MIKE: And since I'm staying I think we should steam-clean the carpets.

ME: Um, OK, I guess.

MIKE: And I ordered a new couch and recliner. I think we should move the sofa we have to the side room and put the new stuff in the living room. Oh, and I want you to go half-and-half on the matching love seat with me. It's only something like $400.

*Sound of my head exploding*

Me and My Effing Big Mouth
"So, now that you've eaten..."

"Oh, it was delicious. Thanks for making dinner."

"You're welcome," he shifted on the couch to face me, lowering the volume on the TV with the remote as he did so. "I've got good news and bad news."

My heart started pounding. "Oh God," I said, dropping my knife onto my plate. "Out with it." But he didn't have to say. I already knew.

"My boss has this condo that he's renovated. And the guy who was going to rent it is backing out. My boss wants me to take it over. For, like, super cheap."

A very long pause.

"So you're leaving?"

"There's a 97% chance, yeah. Things will be more settled after this weekend and I'll have a clearer picture."

"What's the good news?"

"Well, it's lower rent, new building with central air, closer to work."

"That's good for YOU. What about ME?"

"Oh..." Another long pause.

"Fucking wanker. I need this like I need a hole in my head."

"Sorry. It's a good opportunity for me. I don't want to leave you in a lurch or anything. So I'll continue paying rent until you can replace me. Unless you move out too..."

"Why does everyone want to leave me? Am I that hard to live with? I mean, OK, I know I hog the TV sometimes and leave my dishes in the sink, but really?"

"No, it's...Obviously if Kelly were still living here and it was the three of us, I would turn it down. But now...it's different."

"Oh," I said with an air of teasing, "I see. You like Kelly better than me."

"No," he shot back, a little too quickly. Yes, my brain mentally answered. I wasn't offended though. Even I like Kelly better than me.

"OK. Well...I guess I'll figure something out." I went to the kitchen and began clattering around, loading the dishwasher, cleaning up from dinner, wiping down the table. He followed me. "Do you hate me?"

"No, I don't hate you. It's just," I turned to face him, flicking dishtowel down on the counter, "I've got so much going on right now. Work is really stressful. We're not having much luck finding a replacement for me. I'm trying to slog through a lot of crap so that when we do find someone I can move over to Production seamlessly. I haven't even really begun the Editorial Conference Videos at all yet and the conference is in October. Everyone is talking me up so I have all this pressure to just be awesome. My class ends this week and I have a term paper due next week, I still don't have a topic for it yet, much less started it. Then I have two weeks or so until the fall semester starts. I'm worried about money. I'm sad because Kelly left. I'm trying to help out the Doc. And I literally just told the landlord that we're not breaking the lease, so now I look like an asshole. And," I added, putting my hands on my hips, "I'm about to get my period any minute. You couldn't have chosen a worse time to spring this on me."

"Sorry."

"No, I...you have to do what's right by you. I can't blame you for that. I just feel abandoned."

We talked a bit more, tentatively forming plans. After we were done, I hopped in the car and drove to Exton. I was at the intersection of Rt.252 and Rt.30 when I lost it, bursting into tears. First Kelly and now Mike. I felt like shit. I felt unloved. I felt completely overwhelmed. But by the time I got to Exton I had pulled it together.

I pulled into the Blockbuster and walked into talk to Gary. He's interested in moving in with me, provided that certain details get finalized. So there's a plan. Things will be OK. I'll get through this.

Whatever. I'm getting drunk now.

Dance, Dance, wherever you may be...
Fair warning: This is going to be a post about religion. And dancing. And the idea of dance as a form of prayer. I know, that's weird.

I was poking around on the internet on Friday with the hopes of finding an old friend's email address, and I went searching through his blog, which I almost never read as it's a blog about Catholic music. Anyway, while searching, I came across a post about liturgical dancing. Mainly, it referenced this "incident" and expressed disgust and outrage that dancing was allowed in the liturgy.

Now, call me a liberal heathen, but I don't get what the big deal is. Growing up in Catholic school, we did liturgical dancing all the time. Those dresses the girls are wearing? Not that horrible. Not that great, and not what I would necessarily wear to church, but it's not like they were wearing bikinis or their boobs were hanging out or whatever. That first picture? My guess is that it's just been taken at an unfortunate angle during a moment of motion and the dance move wasn't quite as provocative as it appears.

Regardless, this "incident" has been slammed on a number of Catholic blogs (mainly conservative ones) along with the opinion that dance has no part in the liturgy. One of the blogs has a quote from the Pope, back from when he was a cardinal that said,

"Dancing is not a form of expression for the Christian liturgy. In about the third century, there was an attempt by certain Gnostic-Docetic circles to introduce it into the liturgy [...] The cultic dances of the different religions have different purposes--incantation, imitative magic, mystical ecstasy--none of which is compatible with the essential purpose of the liturgy [...] It is totally absurd to try to make the liturgy 'attractive' by introducing dancing pantomimes (wherever possible performed by professional dance troupes)...None of the Christian rites includes dancing. What people call dancing in the Ethiopian rite or the Zairean form of the Roman liturgy is in fact a rhythmically ordered procession, very much in keeping with the dignity of the occasion."

And this is why I'm annoyed. I think dancing absolutely can be a form of expression in Christian liturgy. Dancing can be very spiritual. Back when I was in marching band in high school (Color guard, REPRESENT, yo) I remember a band instructor told us, "There's only two reasons to preform: To uplift and raise the human spirit and to give grace and glory to God." If what he said was true, then dancing most certainly fits in with the liturgy.

The Pope's quote above sort of hints that dancing is too "Pagan" for Catholic services, which to me, is a weak argument. If that's really your concern, then you're going to have to rearrange the church calender since Christmas and Easter were placed on the calender for their close proximity to the solstice and equinoxes. Also, give back St. Bridget.

This whole outrage on dancing is bugging me because the majority of liturgical dancers are women, and this is a way for them to connect with their faith using their whole bodies, a way of being spiritual in a faith that is notorious for pressing them down and shutting them out.

This also illuminating why I don't particularly care for the Pope. Along with his recent "Protestant denominations aren't real churches" announcement, he's making a lot of statements recently that are upsetting a lot of people. Last year he made a statement that associated Muslims with violence, for instance (which he later apologized for, but the sting remains). And while I didn't always agree with John Paul II, I could at least get where he was coming from. Benedict I feel is more conservative for conservatisms sake. And he's pissing a lot of people off.

Add this onto the long long list of Things I Don't Get about my former religion. While I don't practice Catholicism actively anymore, a lot of my identity is wrapped up in this religion. From kindergarten to grad school I've attended Catholic institutions, it would be impossible for me to disengage completely. I still hope though, that someday the Church will live up to what my vernacular thinks it should be.

Cancellation
Renee sent me an email this morning with the subject line "Americans Are Stupid."

She's not wrong. CBS just cancelled Creature Comforts, you see.

I don't know what else to say about this, other than it sucks. And yes, I had a vested interest in the show since I know someone who provided one of the voices, but I can honestly say I probably would have watched it anyway since I love all things Aardman and I watch the British series on BBC America whenever I see it on. So essentially, this blows. And Americans just don't know what's good for them.

And CBS? You can't see it, but I am sticking my tongue out at you and blowing a giant raspberry. Thwwwwwwppppppt!

To the folks at Aardman: You guys are aces, and I think you should continue releasing the episodes online. And please tell me there'll be a DVD?

To EditorPenguin: Email me. I have about a million questions for you.

I HATE YOU. GO AWAY.

I'm a little upset about the weather, you guys.

You Make the Call III
Totally hypothetical, of course. This is not based on anything that actually happened, or something that practically made laser beams shoot out of my eyes in white-hot rage. And any relation to actual events that transpired recently is purely coincidental. Obviously.

PART 1

If you had a problem or concern with the way a coworker manages their time, say, the way they multitask between working on their normal duties (for the sake of argument and clarity let's call it "your publication") and a company-wide, once a year project (again for argument and clarity, "the video project"), would you:

a.) Talk to said coworker about it, expressing your concerns and perhaps offering suggestions on ways to manage time better,

b.) Talk to the coworker's manager about it, again expressing concerns and offering suggestions for better performance, or

c.) Go behind both the coworker's and coworker's manager's back and over their heads (quite the contortionist!) to speak to the CFO and head of department allowing for a whisper-down-the-lane effect to take place and the word to trickle back to the coworker that you think they are a shitty employee and unable to handle their workload.

Now before you answer please factor in the following:

1) During the past year's "video project," at no time did the coworker miss a deadline on "the publication."

2) The "video project" is about, oh, 9 MONTHS AWAY, making this, in effect, a pointless issue to bring up right here and now.

3) Your own work lately has been found lacking, making the fact that you're butting your nose into coworker's work terribly ironic.

So what would you do?

PART 2

Let's pretend, just for fun, that the event above actually did happen with answer "C" in place. Of course it didn't but let's just pretend that it did, and that you're the coworker that was spoken about in such a matter. Would you:

a) Confront the coworker, calling them out on it, making for an even more tense working relationship than you already have,

b) Speak to your managers about the issue, who then in turn speak about it to the CFO defending you and your work ethic, but the coworker basically continues in his pointless passive aggressive micro-managing of you,

c) Move up you career counseling appointment at the graduate school you're currently attending and buy the Sunday Papers scouting for possibilities of new employment,

d) Both b and c, or

e) All of the above.

These questions are purely for sociological and statistical research of course. So please, be honest.

A final of errors
So remember how in my last post I was all, "Wah wah wah, I suck, blah blah blah self-doubt cakes, at least I have until Wednesday to finish"? Yeah, that was a nice story. Then I woke up on Tuesday and realized that 19th was on Tuesday and not Wednesday like I had mistakenly thought.

And then I freaked the fuck out.

I was able to calm down relatively quickly, though, because after I posted Monday night I was able to pull myself together and get a lot done. I was still having problems with CSS and Java Script, but really those parts were just gravy. So Tuesday morning, I took quick stock: I had pretty much an entire website ready to go. I was only missing a links page (easy) and the gallery, which yeah, not happening as I still don't understand SQL stuff. The page wouldn't be as pretty as I pictured in my mind's eye, but it would be nicer than the current Inis Nua site and it would be a fully functioning website. All I had to do was export it and upload it.

Now, like I said, technically I didn't even have to make a full working website for my final. But this was a final I was looking forward to and I wanted to do really well on it...I had thought I would make this awesome site, impress my professor, get an A++ and then go on to academic power and glory, or whatever. But the fates were against me. Because this is how Tuesday went:

Shit. Today's the 19th. I'm fucked.

Oh God, how am I this dumb?

Ok, wait. It's not that bad. I can totally do this. Make links page, clear away useless script coding, upload, Miller Time. Sack up, ho, and get to work.

OK, links page made. Coding cleared. Let's export!

Let's upload!

Uhhh....hmm.

OK, that's never happened to me before.

Let's try again.

And again.

And one more time.

Shit. Ok, well, I have actual work to do at my job. I'll try again later.

OK, here we go...it will work this time.

Or not.

DAMMMIT, WORK.

I wonder if the IT guy here can help me?

Yeah, not so much help there, buddy. Thanks for nuttin.

Bite me, Fetch.

OK, this thing was supposed to be handed in, like an hour ago. I'm fucked.

OK, emailed professor. All cool. I will use built-in FTP client thingy in Adobe GoLive on laptop when I get home. That will work.

Wait, what happened to the buttons on my banner? Why are they suddenly not working?

Waaaaaittt, no no no no! Ah, shit.

OK, let's force quit that nonsense and try again.

Goddamnit, why aren't you recognizing the link slices?

Oh, that's why. I'm a tool. Never mind.

I hate you.

I hate you.

I hate me.

I love Kelly, though, how did she know I needed a glass of wine?

Chardonay!

All right, this is it. Everything good? All right. Site, prepare to be uploaded!

Ta-Da!

Wait, what? Why are you doing that?

Oh my GOD, that looks awful. Why is that happening?

Maybe it's the layers. I'll delete them.

Ok, maybe it's the cell padding on the tables.

OK, maybe it's...I don't know what the hell it is.

OK, let's look at the source code.

You tell me nothing, source code.

Oh God, what do I do now?

I wonder if I can get Kelly to get me a refill on that wine. Wait, no, FOCUS.

Maybe I just need to quit, open up again, re-export and upload.

WHY DO YOU HATE ME, INTERNET, WHEN I'VE SHOWN YOU NOTHING BUT LOVE?!?!

---

Around 10:30 I finally admitted defeat. I would not have a fully functioning website for my professor. Instead, I exported all the Adobe GoLive stuff into a PDF and reworked the entire final to be handed in that way. I took a break around midnight for some dinner and then finally completed everything around 1:30ish.

I sent it off. Hopefully, I won't have too many points docked for lateness since I emailed the professor to tell her it would be late. Better or worse though, it's done and out there. Now I need a web genius to help me fix and get up the actual site.

Semester is over, bitches. Let the revelry begin.

Ugh
So I just modified my blog for Blogger Beta and wrote a long ass entry about happy things (for once) that Blogger then proceeded to not recognize and then posted an empty page. You know why? Because Blogger Beta doesn't like Safari/Camino/Macintosh web browsers. You know what? If I had known that I wouldn't have gone beta. And now? I can't change it back. If want to update my blog I have to use craptastic Internet Explorer.

DO YOU KNOW HOW OBNOXIOUS THAT IS, BLOGGER? SUCK IT.

Update: I've gotten it to work with Safari now, which is better than IE but not as convient for me as Camino. I'm still pissed about losing that (really good) entry. Damn it. I'll try rewriting it tomorrow.
