Beware of the Blob!
I have been meaning to post about Blob Fest for about a week now, and keep failing. Basically, it was as dorky and wonderful as it could possibly be. It's one of those events that I identify as quintessentially Pennsylvanian and the perfect combination of silly, cheesy, and ridiculous. Who would celebrate their participation in a B monster movie from the 50s starring Steve McQueen? Phoenixville, that's who.

Friday night, Renee* and I made it to the theater in time to get in and get plumb seats in the downstairs so we could participate in the pivotal "Running out of the theater" re-enactment. Until it was time to run out of the theater, we were entertained by the band you see above, The Neanderthals, emcees Ghoul A-Go-Go, the Tin Foil Hat competition, the scream competition, and random theater dancing.

Renee and I entertained ourselves by dancing like the Girl in Gold Boots, thanks to a Joan look alike in the audience with us. We also spent good quality time drooling over the Invisible Man (who I got, like, zero pictures of, strangely. And side note, why is the Invisible Man so foxy? How is that possible? Perhaps it's the appeal of not having to look him in the eye the next morning. Heh.), and just generally dorking out.

The actual running out of the theater portion was awesome, so silly and fun. Since this year was the 50th anniversary of The Blob, everyone was especially manic and there was quite the media frenzy. Participating -- and I know this sounds retarded -- felt like we were apart of something quite special. After everyone runs out of the theater screaming their fool heads off, people congregate at the entrance and start chanting, "Blob, Blob, Blob, Blob..." like some bizarre religious cult. And then the guy who owns The Blob comes out and holds up the canister, and seriously, everyone goes nuts. Ridiculous, right?

After the Running, we headed over to The Blob Ball, where there was music, dancing, people in costume, and Blob Jello Shots.

Blob Jello Shots

AHHHH! Blob!

Renee, running from the Blobs.

Day 2 of Blob Fest included the street fair. Sadly, we just missed the Fire Extinguisher Parade. But we made it in time for the costume contest and to hear more of The Neanderthals.

I like Creighton

Renee and Thing!

Renee and I also made a beeline for the Geek Boy Press stand, where we each bought Doctor Who shirts and prints. Geek Boy Press, by the way, is terrific. They have lots of great stuff. Renee was tempted by this Flight of the Conchords print and I had to control myself not to snap up all of his Doctor Who merch and Star Wars merch. I can also testify that Geek Boy Press is aces to do business transactions with, as I've ordered from them online before and they are prompt and amiable. So you should hit it and support them, is what I'm telling you.

One thing I love is that all of the Phoenixville businesses chip in and support one another. There's a real sense of community there.

All in all, another great year of Blob. Renee may well be living elsewhere in the country come next year, but she's promised me that she'll return just for Blobby Goodness. And I'm telling you people, you should come too.

Report from last year's Blob Fest here. More photos here.

*By the way, there is no one more perfect for being your date to Blob Fest than Renee. She rules.
