Yay or Nay?
I'm taking a poll here, you guys. Should I go to AWP in Chicago in February?

PROS

  • It's in Chicago! Visiting with Renee, Joe!, and Wildman.
  • I've never been to Chicago, and it would be nice.
  • Gives me a chance to shmooze with fellow academics and such.
  • Maggie will probably be there.
  • Chance to bond with Rosemont folk.
  • There's most likely going to be some good networking for the publishing industry there too. Which I need.
  • There seems to be some good-looking panels and what-not.

CONS

  • It's Chicago. In February. Brrr.
  • I have to take time off work, after just taking 3 weeks off to go to UK.
  • Technically, I'm not in a writing program. Or even a writer per se.
  • I sort of can't afford it. Well, maybe I could. I don't know.
  • I'll probably be heading to Chicago again a month later for St. Patrick's Day debauchery

RESPONSES TO THE CONS

  • Suck it up, woman
  • Yeah, well. It's not like I don't have the vacation time
  • So what?
  • I could probably arrange to stay with Renee and Joe! or Wildman, saving some moneys, so all I'd really have to pay for is my conference fees, flight, and food.
  • Again, so what?

What do you guys think?

Do it! Sign up to volunteer. You'll get in for free.

Do it, if I regret anything from my single years, ...the cat lady date... never mind.

The biggest regret was some of the cool trips my friends took and I didn't go 'cause I had a lame ass second job on the weekends.

Thinking back the pitance I'd make never amounted to much compared to the infrequent trips that in retrospect were "once in a lifetime" events.

Don't be silly. It's an opportunity to enrich yourself and spend time with people you love -- plus, you have the vacation time and a place to stay. I can't believe this is even up for debate.

Yeah, it'll be frosty-ass, but there are ways to deal with that. One: Get a cute, toasty coat that both warms and announces your amazingness. Two: Wrap your Doctor Who scarf around you three or four times. Three: Find a cute stranger on the streets, tell him your hands are cold, and ask if he minds your warming them in his pants. Feel free to mix and match my suggestions ...

I'm going! If you've never been to AWP, all the more reason to go now. You'll come back feeling good about writing and about yourself as a writer, at least I always do. The bookfair is amazing, and, like me, you know people in Chicago and can go off and cause some mischief with them.

Also, if you're looking for dirt cheap transportation, you can embark on Adventures on Amtrak with me. Syracuse to Chicago is less than $120.

think of it as a pre-St. Pat's trip. That way you have a feel for the city, and when you are royally hammered you might know where you are going!!
I also love reading your travel adventures!
